Edmonton Oilers striker Evander Kane was suspended in a game by the NHL’s safety department for hitting him from behind in the center of Colorado Avelanche’s Nazem Kadri.
The incident happened just moments after Connor McDavid’s opening goal in the first period of Game 3, when Kane hit Kadri, sending him face down on the board. Kane was fined five minutes for uploading the play, but was not expelled.
“As they approach the corner, Kadri moves in front of Kane to determine the position of the body between Kane and the puck. In response, and before any of the players could touch the puck, Kane picked up his wand and struck Kadri in the back, driving him into the board with force and injuring him. It’s boarding, “the NHL Players’ Safety Department said in a video.
“It is important to note that this is not a scenario in which Kadri is placed in a vulnerable position immediately before the strike in a way that makes the legal inspection illegal.
“While we acknowledge that Kadri is positioned in front of Kane to defend the puck, this action is not a sudden or abrupt movement that changes the nature of Kane’s strike in a way he cannot control. And while we acknowledge Kane’s argument that Kadri loses support when approaching the boards, we believe that this is a direct result of the push and is not an inevitable event that causes an unfortunate accident. “
The players’ safety department cited Kane’s story with three penalties and two fines in his 812 career.
Kadri did not return until the end of the match and although his injury has not been revealed, it is assumed that it is an injury to his right thumb, according to Ken Weibe from Sportsnet.
Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar later said Kadri would not play again soon.
“He’s out – he will be absent at least for the series, if not more. “The blow is the most dangerous blow in hockey,” he said.
Kane explained his views on what happened after the match:
“I just went in for a check-up. The puck went wide, somehow dribbling in the corner. I know he likes to strike back. “I was just trying to stand up to him, that’s really all I did,” Kane said. “Unfortunately, he entered the boards awkwardly and injured his hand.”
