Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with frontline soldiers and internally displaced Ukrainians during a trip to the Zaporizhia region on Sunday.
Zelensky “visited the front positions of the Ukrainian military”, using the opportunity to get acquainted “with the operational situation on the front lines of defense,” according to a statement from the Ukrainian presidency.
The president spoke with the soldiers, handing them state awards and thanking them for their service, the statement said.
“I want to thank you for your great work, for your service, for the protection of all of us, our country. I am grateful to everyone. I want to wish you and your families good health. Take care of yourself, “Zelenski told frontline soldiers.
He also paid for a trip to a sanatorium, where internally displaced Ukrainians forced to flee their homes receive shelter and medical care, according to a separate statement from the Ukrainian presidency.
A little more context: Nearly 12 million Ukrainians have been internally displaced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Zelensky told lawmakers in Luxembourg on Thursday.
I understand that everyone wants to return home. And this home, as comfortable as it is, cannot be compared to your own home. There is no better place than home, “Zelenski told IDPs on Sunday.
IDPs traveling from the southern city of Mariupol told the president “the tragic events they had to endure due to the Russian invasion”, asking him for help in recovering lost documents and issuing death certificates to relatives who died in the temporarily occupied territories, according to the report.
Zelenski invited them to make proposals for “legislative changes” that could be made to simplify the procedures for obtaining these documents.
He assured IDPs that all those who had lost their homes would be provided with “comfortable housing”, the statement said.
Finally, Zelenski gave a present to the 8-year-old boy Yehor Kravtsov, who kept a diary while living under fire in Mariupol. Yehor, whose writings in the Mariupol Diary were published on social media, shared with Zelenski his experiences of the bombing of the city.
