The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are still a few months away at the time of writing, with launch likely in September and the wait long because the leak and rumors suggest there’s a lot to look forward to.
It sounds like the year will be weird for the iPhone, with Pro models getting even more upgrades than usual, while the standard iPhone 14 is unlikely to be an upgrade to the iPhone 13.
So here we look at the Pro models and describe in detail the best upgrades we have heard of so far. None of these things have been confirmed yet, but at the moment they all sound pretty likely.
1. No more slots

Perhaps the biggest change for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is that Apple is reportedly getting rid of the slot.
This is something we’ve wanted for years, mainly since the slot debuted on the iPhone X, and it looks very likely that this will be the year it will be removed, as numerous leaks suggest.
Apple’s alternative may not be to everyone’s liking, as it seems likely that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will have two cutouts on the screen instead. One small hole and one bigger one.
This is an imperfect solution and will mean that the screen remains more broken than on most Android phones, but it is probably necessary for Apple to accommodate all components of Face ID.
2. 48MP camera

Apple doesn’t upgrade the cameras on its phones every year, at least not in any significant way, but this year we can expect big changes, as rumors point to a 48MP main sensor in place of the 12MP used in the iPhone 13 line.
This could mean a major upgrade to the already impressive photographic capabilities of Apple’s best iPhones, and will reportedly allow 8K video – compared to 4K on current models.
It remains to be seen how much of a difference this change in lens will make – if it happens – in fact, but we would expect a noticeable improvement.
3. Much more power
This is probably the most obvious and expected upgrade, but the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, of course, will almost certainly be more powerful than the iPhone 13 Pro line, thanks to the new A16 Bionic chipset.
These phones are also likely to get an increase in RAM from 6GB to 8GB, although only one source mentions this, with most disagreeing.
Interestingly, the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max can stick to the current chipset, so while the new chipset is not the most exciting or unexpected upgrade, you may need to purchase a Pro model to get this year.
4. Always on display

Many Android phones offer permanently on displays, and this feature – which can display time icons and notifications even when the screen is off – can also come in line with the iPhone 14 Pro.
This is according to a reputable source who claims that the feature can be activated as part of iOS 16, but probably only for phones that can reduce their refresh rate to 1Hz. No current iPhone has this battery-saving feature, but the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will obviously have one, which allows them to use a permanently on display.
5. Larger battery
We are always hoping for bigger batteries in the phones – or at least a better battery life in one way or another – and it seems that the iPhone 14 Pro line can deliver, as one source claims that the batteries will be more big this year.
We’re not sure how much bigger, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max already has an impressive battery life, so durability can be a real highlight this year if it gets even better.
