Missing ATV riders found dead near Bachavana Bay

An ATV operator and a passenger were found dead after being reported missing near Bachavana Bay on the afternoon of June 3rd.

The bodies of 78-year-old Rudolf Whitley and 76-year-old Vera Molochnikova were found by police the next morning, the Sault Ste Marie squad of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a press release.

Their ATV was found submerged in the Bachavana River, a few kilometers from where they were originally reported missing.

On June 3, 2022, shortly after 4:00 p.m., members of the Salt St. Marie Ontario Police Department (OPP), OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), Northeastern (St. Marie) Kennel Club, Batchewana First Nation Police Service, OPP Helicopter and Sault Search and Rescue responded to a report of two missing people in the area of ​​Tribag Mine Road in Batchawana Bay.

The investigation found that three side-by-side ATVs were on the road with bushes, and two passed and passed through the danger of the road and walked several hundred meters and waited for the third side by side to catch up. The third one, side by side, never caught up with him.

Police in the area immediately responded and launched a search, which continued throughout the night. On June 4, 2022, shortly after 10 am, police found the missing next to each other, submerged in the Bachavana River, a few kilometers from where they disappeared.

The driver, 78-year-old Rudolf Whitley, and the passenger, 76-year-old Vera Molochnikova, both from Salt Saint-Marie, have been identified as dead.

The OPP Technical Investigators of Traffic Collisions (TTCI) and the Office of the Chief Coroner – Ontario’s Office of Forensic Pathology (OCC-FPS) are supporting this investigation.
