Wind and rain will come later this week

After a mostly dry and nice start to the week, some wet and windy weather is on the way.

The low-pressure system, which was responsible for some of the unstable weather over the weekend, is already in the North Sea, leaving behind some rains for the eastern coastal areas on Monday and Tuesday. Elsewhere, a mix of clouds and sunshine is the main topic earlier this week, with the only other rains likely to occur near the south coast early Tuesday.

Unstable weather is ahead

A more coordinated change is expected from late Tuesday with the arrival of a low-pressure system in the west, which will first bring rain in the south-west and Northern Ireland late Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

This low pressure will continue to be slowly tracked in the east of the UK on Wednesday and carries with it the risk of some slow-moving thunderstorms in the northern parts of the UK, although the exact positioning is still being determined.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Adam Thornhill said: “Low pressure on Wednesday will bring rain in most parts of the UK, but the heaviest, slow-moving rainfall is expected in the north, including Northern Ireland, with likely thunderstorms. and lightning. Although rainfall is still open to some uncertainty, some areas in the north are likely to see more than 20 mm of rain within a 3-hour period.

“It will largely disintegrate later in the day on Wednesday, leaving only a few souls until late in the evening.

The unresolved issue will continue later this week as the remnants of former tropical storm Alex, which has brought heavy rain to South Florida in recent days, head to the northwestern United Kingdom from the Atlantic and bring some strong winds. and rain, albeit to a much lesser extent than was observed in America.

Adam continued: “As the former tropical storm Alex approaches the shores of the United Kingdom, it will move to a mature low level in the Atlantic Ocean. Although it will have lost much of its power, it will bring some unusually strong winds to the UK – especially in the northwest on Thursday and Friday.

“The path of the former storm now appears to be grazing in the far north-west of the UK on Thursday and Friday, and although details are still being worked out, winds could be around 45 mph for most in the north of the UK, with a chance of some gusts in excess of 55 miles per hour in some open northwestern islands and coastal areas. ”

While much will depend on the positioning of former tropical storm Alex late Friday, the weather over the weekend looks likely to be a mix of sunshine and rain – which may be strongest in the northwest – with some windy conditions likely to linger. in the far north.
