A driver of a vehicle that crashed and killed a 15-year-old boy comes forward

RCMPs were notified of a pedestrian being hit by a car in the southern lane of the highway shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.

A woman in her early 20s told police on Sunday that she was the driver who fatally hit a teenager on Nanaimo Parkway last night and failed to stay at the scene.

The woman was released unconditionally, the Nanaimo RCMP said.

A 15-year-old boy was hit and killed in the southern lanes of the boulevard near the Aulds Road intersection around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Several drivers called 911 to report that they had seen someone running in and out of traffic and that moments later that person had been hit by a motor vehicle.

Police noted that the teenager was wearing dark clothes and it was raining at the time of the collision, which led to poor visibility.

The highway was closed for several hours while investigators inspected the scene. The victim was later identified as a 15-year-old boy from Nanaimo.

The young woman’s older model jeep Nissan was seized for forensic examination.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Anyone who has witnessed the collision or has a camera recording is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP’s 250-754-2345 emergency line and quote file # 2022-19019.

Nanaimo RCMP’s victim services have contacted the victim’s family, police said.
