A U.S. serviceman may have planted explosives in an internal attack on an army base

An internal attack on a US military base in Syria, in which four soldiers were wounded, may have been carried out by an officer, military officials said.

The potential suspect is returning to the state as the army’s criminal investigation department and the Air Force’s Special Investigation Service are investigating the April 7 attack on a base called Green Village, an army spokesman said.

The explosives were placed in an ammunition and shower storage area. Two officials told CNN that the explosives were “not insignificant” and had a greater detonation force than a hand grenade.

The four soldiers were assessed for possible craniocerebral injuries and other minor injuries.

“At this point, these are just allegations, all suspects are presumed innocent until / unless convicted in court,” a military statement said, according to CNN.

“The investigation is ongoing, which may or may not develop sufficient evidence to identify the perpetrator (s) and have sufficient evidence to secure a conviction in court. No further information will be published at this time. “

The U.S. military initially said the injuries were caused by artillery or other forms of indirect fire, but later said the attack was carried out by “deliberately placing explosive charges” at the base.

The attack took place in the dead of night and security footage shows two examples of a figure moving fast, CNN reported.

Authorities are also investigating whether soldiers guarded any of the sites where the bombs exploded, CNN reported. Authorities could not tell the publication what the motive for the attack might be.

Hundreds of troops have been stationed in eastern Syria to oppose the Islamic State group.
