Actor and advocate for arms policy Matthew McConaughey will join White House spokesman Carin Jean-Pierre on Tuesday for the Biden administration’s daily briefing.
His appearance in the White House comes a day after McConaughey, best known for his roles in films such as The Wedding Planner and The Dallas Buyers Club, wrote a post in The Austin American-Statesman entitled “It’s Time to Arm.” Responsibility. “
The actor called on lawmakers to assess the difference between “control” of weapons and “responsibility” after a horrific mass shooting in May that killed 19 children and two teachers in Uwalde, Texas, where McConaughey was born.
“I believe that responsible, law-abiding Americans have the right of the Second Amendment, laid down by our founders, to bear arms. I also believe we have a cultural obligation to take steps to delay the senseless killing of our children,” he wrote.
“There is no constitutional barrier to arms liability,” McConaughey continued. “Keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous people is not only the most important thing to do, it’s the best way to protect the Second Amendment. We can do both.”
The Biden administration has called on Congress to take steps to control guns after two mass shootings last month: the Uwalde Elementary School killings and a separate racist attack on a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, that killed 10 people.
