Apple announced its new iPhone software, iOS 16, during its developer conference on Monday. New lock screen customization options suggest that at least one of this year’s new iPhones will get a feature that Android phones have had for years: always with the display on.

Apple’s iOS 16 software, which is in beta and will be released to everyone this fall, allows you to add all sorts of things to the lock screen. So you can quickly view the weather, battery status of your AirPods, upcoming calendar events and more. However, on the current iPhone, you still need to tap the power button to turn on the screen.

But if Apple always adds a display to its next iPhone, it will allow you to simply look at your new lock screen on your phone while it sits on your desk. This is something that Samsung, Google and other manufacturers of Android phones have been incorporating into their phones for years. Apple has opposed the addition of this option, perhaps instead focusing on longer battery life. Always turning on the display can slowly drain the battery, even if the screen is much darker.

This is an always-on display mode that reduces the screen to save battery life.

Apple Watch Series 5 and newer models offer permanently on displays and work well. On the watch you can look down and see the time, temperature and certain applications, such as maps, even when the screen is not fully turned on or lit. It sits in a darkened state, so you can still use the watch without having to slide your wrist to wake it up.

A new iPhone can work the same way, displaying key information you choose to put on the lock screen without having to wake the phone to its full brightness.

Bloomberg said this is a feature that Apple already plans to add to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the higher-end models expected this fall. This means that it may not be available on the regular iPhone 14. But it may be an attractive enough feature that people will want to spend more on Pro models.
