The Weather Network – PHOTOS: Funnel clouds observed after storms hit South Alberta

Monday, June 6, 2022, 8:58 p.m. – Storms on Monday dropped heavy rain and hail in many communities in southern Alberta, along with localized floods and numerous funnel cloud observations.

The weather in southern Alberta has been repeated for the past two days: thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail.

Monday added another element to this stormy pattern – funnel clouds.

A semi-stationary border across the province acted as a trigger for storms in the afternoon and evening. An area of cohesion in the atmosphere, focused in the southeastern parts of the province, also led to the development of the funnel cloud in many locations. There is no confirmation that any of them reached the ground to turn into a tornado.

The storms threw heavy amounts of rain and hail into many communities in southern Alberta, along with localized floods, in addition to observations of clouds in the funnel.

“With the lack of upper flow levels in the region, developing storms will be slow again and have the potential to produce nickel-sized hail and heavy rain, which could lead to sudden floods if the storm remains stationary.” said Kelly Sonenburg, a meteorologist with The Weather Network, about the threat of a storm on Monday.

In Calgary, many drivers had stopped in heavy traffic to take shelter under an overpass, an action that is incredibly dangerous. If you are caught in a storm on the road, we have some tips in the chart below.

Rainfall and thunderstorms will continue on Monday night, with rain continuing at night. Light thunderstorms are also possible on Tuesday, but not as widely as on Monday as the system weakens and moves southeast.

Meanwhile, it didn’t take long for users to post visualizations of the funnel clouds and other effects of the storm on social media. Below is just a selection of what is currently circulating.
