Built-in support for the Nintendo Switch Joy Cons is here with iOS 16

Yesterday, Apple held its annual WWDC, where it announced updates for iOS and MacOS along with beta programs for developers to begin testing new features. We’ve already looked at some of the changes that will come with iOS 16 in a separate post, but one that Apple didn’t explicitly mention is that the new version of the OS brings natural support for Nintendo’s Switch Joy Cons and Nintendo’s Pro Controller.

Joy Cons are controllers that connect to a Nintendo Switch handheld console and can be used either as one controller (one in each hand), or one Joy Con can be used as a separate controller with more basic controls. As stated by the application developer @RileytestutiOS 16 supports one or two Joy Cons via Bluetooth.

Apple engineer Nat Brown confirms that you can pair two Joy Con controllers and switch between using the two or using one by pressing and holding the Capture and Home buttons on each Joy Con.

Test away. Lmk, if you encounter any problems. When both are paired, hold down the lower face buttons (left “capture”, right “home”) for a few seconds to merge the Joy Cons into one controller and do this again to separate them.

Given that iOS 16 is currently in the beta phase of developers, there are inevitably bugs in the entire operating system. Similarly, some users are already reporting errors when switching between single and combined Joy Cons.
