It’s no secret that Infinity Ward is working on a sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from 2019 and now the studio is finally unveiling its next blockbuster. It’s called Modern Warfare II and includes both a single player campaign that is a direct continuation of the previous game and multiplayer, including a new tactical cooperative mode.
First, the campaign. Here’s how Infinity Ward describes the setup:
Modern Warfare ll take action as a sequel to Modern Warfare (2019), as the newly formed Task Force 141 faces a huge global threat in a campaign of missions that expand the boundaries of the game. The action takes players around the world, while Task Force 141 works to neutralize a terrorist plot and attack the United States, covering places around the world. A newly united threat is plotting to create chaos within the United States, and Task Force 141 must come together against all odds.
Players will fight alongside the most iconic characters in Modern Warfare, including Captain Price, Ghost, Soap, Gaz and Laswell, as well as face a host of deadly new allies such as the Mexican Special Forces, Colonel Alejandro Vargas and opponents drawn from the most the darkest corners of the global war on terror.
Given the current state of the world, with the ongoing war in Ukraine and a sudden focus on gun violence in the United States, Modern Warfare II launched at a difficult time. (This doesn’t even mention the many, many lawsuits facing the publisher of Call of Duty Activision Blizzard.)
In a pre-press release before the announcement, Infinity Ward co-studio director Patrick Kelly explained: “We’re telling fictional stories. But it is inspired by real military events that shape the world we live in. This is sensitive for me, because with the events that are happening in the world, the war against Ukraine, it is important for me to be sensitive to this one. ” He explained that one of the goals was to present the characters of the game as “heroic but also human”. This philosophy seems to be a change from the previous Modern Warfare, which tended to be more sensational images of war.

Meanwhile, the multiplayer will include both large-scale maps for many players at once – the studio says it has learned a lot from the creation of the Verdansk map for the royal battle of Call of Duty: Warzone – and smaller ones designed for six against six. matches. There is also what the studio describes as “a developed game mode with special operations, including tactical cooperative gameplay.”
As part of its official unveiling of Modern Warfare II, Activision also confirmed that Call of Duty: Warzone will appear on mobile devices. (The publisher said something similar earlier this year.) There aren’t many other details about the details – such as when it will launch or how it will differ from the console and computer version – but the publisher says the mobile Warzone is part of a “new” era ”for the franchise. This includes a number of developments, such as using the same engine in Modern Warfare II and the next iteration of Warzone, due later this year, and treating this new Warzone experience as an “extension of the Modern Warfare II universe.”
Here is the publisher’s statement on the issue:
October 28 marks a new beginning for Call of Duty, beginning with the release of Modern Warfare II. Soon after, an entirely new Warzone will be launched as a sequel to the Modern Warfare II universe. With it come new technologies, new features and new gameplay that work seamlessly together. All the while, we took to heart a wide range of community feedback. To fully provide this state-of-the-art experience, Warzone 2.0 will include new content and systems for Modern Warfare II with brand new progressions and inventory. Today’s Warzone will continue as a separate experience, which will include a continuation of the players’ progress and inventory within this Warzone experience.
Modern Warfare II is scheduled to launch on October 28 for a wide range of platforms, including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S and PC via Battle.net and for the first time in years Steam.
