“I will not apologize”: Angela Merkel defends relations with Putin

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she has “nothing to apologize for” in her treatment of Russia in her 16 years in office.

In her first major interview since leaving office, Ms Merkel denied speculation that she and others had appeased Russian President Vladimir Putin, which eventually led to the invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking at the Berliner Ensemble Theater to German journalist Alexander Osang, she said: “I have tried to work to prevent disaster and diplomacy is not wrong if it fails.
