JJ Abrams “Demimonde” will not move forward on HBO due to budget problems – deadline

HBO is not officially moving forward with JJ Abrams’ ambitious science fiction drama series HBO Demimonde. The decision comes after weeks of discussions with Abrams, his production company Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV, which focused on the show’s budget. As Deadline reported last month, project studios Warner Bros. Television and HBO were trying to control the cost, but Bad Robot firmly supported the proposed budget, which is said to be in the middle of the $ 200 million range and would not agree to a reduction.

The final stages of Demimonde’s talks took place amid a larger reassessment of Abrams’ Bad Robot’s large-scale Warner Bros. deal on film, television, games and digital content, as the new Warner Bros. Discovery is looking closely at every aspect of the assets it took over when the merger ended in April.

Bought from HBO four years ago with a direct order for the series, Demimonde, which was developed and sold under Bad Robot’s previous WBTV pact, was still in early pre-production when the plug was pulled.

Screenwriter, executive producer and director of Abrams, Demimond, his first solo television creation since Alias, was to play Daniel Deadwiller as Olive Reed, who was torn apart by her husband and daughter in a brutal scientific disaster. She is forced to unravel a conspiracy to reunite with her family, now lost in a dark, distant other world.

Kira Snyder, Rand Ravich and Far Sharia were showrunners. They are executive producers with Abrams and Ben Stevenson of Bad Robot. Rachel Rush Rich was a co-executive producer.

Last summer, HBO Max chose not to continue with another Bad Robot series, The Shining, the branch series Overlook. The project has since been created on Netflix. It is unclear whether Demimonde will be purchased from other buyers.
