More details on iOS 16: New user interface for FaceTime video calls, redesigned video player and more

Apple this week announced iOS 16, a major version full of significant lock screen customization features, new focus mode features, the ability to edit and download iMessages, and more.

While Apple demonstrated some of the key features of the iOS 16 during its crowded WWDC keynote speech, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of smaller features and changes that users are left to discover. Below is a list of six changes and new features you may not be aware of.

Transparent user interface for FaceTime video calls

During a video call in FaceTime, Apple updated the user interface in ‌iOS 16 to be completely transparent, with buttons for camera, microphone, message, speaker and SharePlay, which are now larger and easier to touch.

Mention suggestions in iMessage now include contact images

When you mention a contact in iMessage, the mention suggestions already include an image of the contact in the quick touch bar. This can be especially useful in group chats, where several people can share their own name.

Completely redesigned user interface of the video player

Apple has redesigned the user interface of the standard video player in iOS 16, making it cleaner, getting rid of unnecessary clutter, while emphasizing basic controls such as volume, playback / pause and picture in picture.

Redesigned voice messaging experience in iMessage

Apple redesigned the iMessage voice messaging experience with iOS 16, making it a separate iMessage app that lives in the application bar.

The app allows users to touch, hold and record messages faster. Apple has replaced the previous hold and drag gesture to record voice messages with a new dictation button. In this regard, users can now view voice messages in ‌iOS 16‌.

History of access to privacy

In ‌iOS 16‌, Apple adds a clean trick that allows users to check which apps have recently gained access to their camera, microphone, location and other sensitive sensors on their iPhone. The new view can be accessed by tapping at the top of the Control Center shortly after the app has used access.
