OPP finds the body of a missing kayak

The OPP’s underwater search and rescue unit found the body of 23-year-old Kyle Busua-Virta after a two-day search.

Busua-Virta was reported missing on Sunday when he did not return from a kayak trip to Lake Driving north of Garden River First Nation.

Units from Sault Ste. Marie OPP Squad, Northeast Cynological Unit of the OPP, Emergency Response Team (ERT), Aviation Helicopter Services, Underwater Search and Rescue Team (USRT), Batchewana First Nation Police Service, Sault Ste Police Service (drone search) , Search and Rescue Sault Ste Marie (Marine) responded and searched the area from around 10:30 pm on June 5, until his body was found around 3:30 pm on June 7.

The investigation continues under the direction of the Chief Coroner’s Office and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS).

A post-mortem examination is expected to take place at Sault Ste. Marie at a later date.
