Quebec abolishes the mandate for public transport masks from June 18

Quebec will remove mandates for COVID-19 masks on public transport from Saturday, June 18.

Health officials confirmed in a press release Wednesday that Health Minister Christian Dubet made the decision following a public health recommendation.

“This is an important step, which confirms the significant improvement in the epidemiological situation in recent weeks. The decision to wear a mask, both in public places and on public transport, will remain a personal choice,” he said in a press release.

The health department noted that everyone should respect those who wish to continue wearing the mask to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.

Mask mandates remain in force in healthcare facilities, including:

  • general and specialized care hospitals (excluding psychiatric hospitals)
  • long-term care facilities (public or private)
  • CLSC
  • medical clinics where a doctor, nurse or assistant practices (except in places where exclusively mental health services are offered)

In addition, people who have had COVID-19 must wear a mask during all social interactions for at least five days after isolation at home. Those who live with someone who has COVID-19 should also wear it for 10 days.
