Shots fired by masked men during a chase during the day

Shots were fired by four masked men during a chase during a busy day.

Police were summoned to Mill Lane, Waverrius shortly after 6.10pm to report that four masked men in dark clothes were driving a bike and a scooter, chasing each other when a shot was fired. An hour later, police were called to Mill Lane’s house, where they found damage to a window corresponding to the shots.

No casualties were reported, and police said they believed the attack was targeted. At one point, Mill Lane was closed in both directions due to the incident, with eyewitnesses reporting a large police presence on roads around the area, including Deverell Road. The police helicopter was also seen.

There were several police scenes with one police cordon in front of a group of houses and another, much larger, at the intersection with Deverell Road, near a bus stop. It was noticed that the police conducted a fingertip search on the second scene and searched the sewer.

Eyewitnesses told ECHO that the area was “usually quiet”. A man who lives near the scene in front of the house said he “heard a pop” but thought it might be a fireworks display. It wasn’t until he saw forensics and the cordon that he said he knew it was “something serious.”

Forensic scientists have been spotted at the scene of the house, which suffered damage, taking pictures inside and out. Officials will remain in the area to perform forensic medicine, video surveillance, house-to-house and witness, and talk to the local community.
