Taiwanese F-16 fighter crashes in Hawaii

WASHINGTON –

A Taiwanese F-16 fighter crash-landed at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Hawaii on Monday afternoon, and the pilot of the US Air Force, who was piloting the plane, was taken to hospital for treatment, US officials said on Tuesday.

According to officials, the plane apparently had problems with the landing gear and the pilot declared a state of emergency during the flight and landed. A mesh barrier was used to slow and stop the plane, and the bow collapsed after contact with the net, officials said.

The pilot has not been identified and has not been seriously injured, officials said on condition of anonymity to discuss details before the investigation was completed.

The United States regularly sells F-16s to Taiwan. Officials said the pilot took off from an air force base in the continental United States and had to stop in Hawaii on his way to Taiwan.

The United States has programs to upgrade and upgrade older F-16 models in Taiwan, as well as plans to supply new aircraft models. It was unclear whether the fighter was new or older.
