Apple had its annual WWDC in Cupertino this year and, as expected, announced many new features for one of the most popular tablet sales lines in the world. Three years ago, Apple split iPadOS from iOS to better focus on the larger form factor. Apple has now released a number of new features for the iPadOS 16, including a new weather app, Stage Manager multitasking and more.
Craig Federigi noted that Apple wants to create a separate experience built on the best of iOS such as security, mobility and an intuitive first-touch interface with powerful macOS features such as multitasking and trackpad support. Combined with features like the Apple Pencil, which are unique to the iPad. All of this comes together to provide our most versatile device. ” We’ve already worked with it, so here are all the new features built into iPadOS 16.

What’s new in iPadOS 16
Improvements for iOS and macOS
First of all, Apple pointed out that many of the same features it introduced in iOS 16 and macOS Ventura also come in iPadOS 16. These include a shared photo library, shared partition groups, and Safari access keys. A shared photo library is an automatic library of photos shared between members of your family group, to which all family members have access to add, edit, or remove photos. Photos can be added automatically over time or by identifying who is in the photos.
In addition, iPadOS will receive shared groups of partitions and login without a password. As previously reported, Microsoft, Google and Apple are working together to remove passwords where possible. Apple fully embraces the concept in its latest versions on all platforms.
The weather on the iPad
Apple also introduced a brand new iPad weather app. The new application will take full advantage of the large display and will include animated backgrounds reflecting current weather conditions. Each module in the time application can be touched to provide additional data. Apple is also building a WeatherKit API for developers to incorporate Weather into their iPad apps.
Collaboration on iPadOS 16
Collaboration is the real-time sharing of an original document so that everyone can work on it at the same time. It’s more like Google Docs, but what’s nice is that you can start collaborating via Messages or FaceTime directly from the sharing list. Just select Collaboration and select the conversation you want to share. This works in both Messages and FaceTime.
You can also share groups of tabs from Safari to the group. When you do, you will see icons for who is watching in which section in real time. In addition, Apple is opening an API to allow third-party developers to use collaboration if they wish.
Free form
Apple gave us a brief overview of a new collaboration app called Freeform. Freeform is a large collaboration space, like a whiteboard, where all groups can work together using tools similar to those in Notes with various bruises and sticky notes, photos, etc. It’s an endless space where you use touch to slide the interface around, and pinch to zoom in and out.
Metal 3 and other game improvements
For the first time, iPadOS 16 introduces the Metal 3 API on the iPad. Apple is looking for iPads to be gaming machines with 3D graphics activated by Metal 3. In addition, Apple has a new API that allows larger asset packs to be downloaded in the background while playing the game.
With your Game Center account, you can find friends, track progress in various games, and view rankings for various games. While iOS games are largely the domain of phones, Apple is pushing more gamers to use the iPad, and these moves are designed to do just that.
Desktop class applications and system-wide features
Apple is launching a number of desktop-class applications and features for the entire iPad system. This is an extensive list, but some of them include undo / redo throughout the system, calendar availability view, and the ability to find and merge maps in Contacts. You can also change file extensions and view the sizes of folders in the Files application.
Apple has also launched a find-and-replace system that works online. Apple has added a menu for documents in Files, Pages and Keynote, which allows you to perform common actions. Finally, Apple has added the ability to customize your toolbars in some applications, allowing you to access the most used tools.
Stage Manager and iPadOS 16 window applications
Stage manager is Apple’s new multitasking interface for macOS and is here on iPadOS 16. In general, iPadOS 16 allows you to create workspaces with overlapping windows that can be moved and resized. Stage Manager will then organize your applications into different groups and move them aside so that you can interact with your main task in front and in the center. This is a quick way to move between tasks, which will make your iPad much better at multitasking. Craig Federigi called it the basis for a big leap forward in the consumer experience. One that can change the way our professional users do on the iPad. ”
Reference color
Reference mode is only available on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Professional users need accurate colors to complete their work. According to Federigi, “The reference mode meets the requirements for colors in workflows such as review and approval, color grading and composition. Where accurate colors and consistent image quality are crucial. Standalone device or with the help of a basket. “
M1 improvements
Finally, there are a number of enhancements that are designed to take advantage of the M1 processor in the iPad at a higher level. You can use display scaling to increase the pixel density of the display and give you more space to work. You can also use virtual memory swap, which means you can use iPad memory as virtual RAM for up to 16 GB of virtual memory for demanding applications.
