Why the 49ers have more urgency to contract with Deebo Samuel than Nick Boza

SANTA CLARA – The main remaining priority for the 49ers this offseason is to sign with broad successor Deibo Samuel for a multi-year contract extension.

There is no such urgency with a defensive end to Nick Boza.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said on Tuesday that the 49ers have not yet entered into contact talks with Boza. The teams are allowed to first start negotiations to extend the contract with draft elections after three seasons.

Boza and Samuel were selected in the 2019 NFL Draft and each finished their third year in the NFL last season.

Shanahan was asked if negotiations with Bosa had begun.

“They are not,” Shanahan said. “I’m sure this is a great tweet. I don’t know if it’s a big tweet or something, but no. ”

As No. 2 overall, Bosa signed a four-year, $ 33.55 million contract, including a preliminary signing bonus of nearly $ 22.5 million. The 49ers have already opted for the fifth year option with Bosa for the 2023 season at a fully guaranteed price of $ 17.859 million.

By comparison, Samuel’s original contract was four years for $ 10.1 million. It is planned to win $ 3.9 million this season, which is far below the market value of the All-Pro.

So while the 49ers and Samuel’s office are expecting to get a new contract near the start of training camp, there doesn’t seem to be the same accelerated schedule with Boza, as he has already been well compensated in his short career.

However, Shanahan has made it clear that he expects Bosa to play for the 49ers well after his initial contract.

“We haven’t done that with Nick yet, it’s just that both sides are doing it now and I’m not very worried about that,” Shanahan said. “I totally expect Nick Boza to be here for a very long time.”

Boza did not take part in the voluntary part of the off-season program. He trains near his home in Miami.

Boza showed up at 49ers on Monday for exercise and took part in some individual training on Tuesday, the first day of the team’s mandatory mini-camp.

“Seeing him for the first time in a while, Nick always takes care of himself as well as any athlete I’ve been around,” Shanahan said. “He had a good tan from Florida when he saw him yesterday.

“His fours are still huge and he is ready to play football when it comes time to leave.”
