President Biden made his first appearance in the studio on a late-night talk show Wednesday, discussing gun control and other issues with host Jimmy Kimmel in Los Angeles.
The episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” began with Kimmel, who asked why gun violence still plagues the United States, noting that there are already two dozen school shootings this year. Biden recalled his recent visit to Uwalde, Texas, where two weeks ago a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at Rob Elementary School – and where the president was forced to “do something!”
“Much of this is intimidation by the NRA,” Biden said, citing the National Weapons Association on why there was no movement under federal gun law. The House of Representatives on Wednesday night adopted several gun control measures in response to recent shootings in Uwalde, Buffalo and elsewhere, but they are unlikely to pass through the Senate due to opposition from the Republican Party.
“This is not your father’s Republican Party,” Biden added, saying he believed many Republican lawmakers feared that support for a “sound weapons policy” would lead to the loss of a staunch right-wing Republican primary candidate. party.
At one point, Biden addressed the audience in the studio and called on them to turn gun control into a matter of voting.
“You have to make sure that this is a vote. This should be one of those issues where you decide your position on the issue of a senator or a candidate for the House of Representatives or the Senate, on what we will do with the weapons of attack. “What you say about these things will determine how I vote for you,” Biden said. Biden also defended his record when Kimmel, a Democratic donor who contributed to Biden’s 2020 campaign, urged him why the administration had not achieved more. Biden said he had not issued more executive orders, including on weapons, because he did not want to “imitate Trump’s abuse of the constitution and constitutional powers.”
Kimmel stepped back slightly, saying many Democrats were disappointed because “we went out and voted.”
“We have won the House, the Senate, the White House, obviously, and yet we have made very little progress on weapons, obviously, reproductive rights, voting rights, climate change – all these things,” Kimmel said.
Biden says his administration has made limited progress on climate, and said he is considering enforcement orders he could issue if the Supreme Court overturns Rowe vs. Wade. But he also suggested that any new restrictions on abortion could only be lifted at the ballot box.
