There are currently 112 cases of monkeypox across Canada. The chief public health officer, Dr. Teresa Tam, says 98 are in Quebec, 4 in Alberta and 9 in Ontario. The National Immunization Advisory Committee recommends a single dose of a Canadian-approved vaccine against the virus for those at high risk of being exposed to a probable or confirmed case of monkeypox or in an environment where transmission occurs.
Officials continue to monitor new cases, and Dr. Tam expects more to appear. The National Microbiological Laboratory is sequencing the virus that causes cases in Canada, and early results suggest that they are linked to an international outbreak.
