BTS’s new single “Yet To Come” offers a touching reflection and an optimistic invitation to the future

As early as 2015, BTS embarked on an era they called “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life.” This title refers to that period of young adulthood, when everything feels possible and full of potential, but crippling insecurity and insecurity lurk around every corner as you try to orient yourself in a life of responsibility and self-assurance. Six years later – older, wiser and farther from the intensity of this transition period – the Korean group returns to this description.

This time, however, “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life” unfolded. He is no longer just focused on a certain stage of life or even anchored in the present. On “Yet To Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)”, the lead single from BTS’s new anthology album “Proof”, it is both nostalgic and optimistic about the future. “Yes, the past was honestly the best / But my best is what’s next,” V sang early, his voice rich and luxurious in tone and confident.

“Proof” – which largely contains the songs that raised BTS to the dizzying heights they now occupy (or demonstrations and alternatives to these songs) – is a moment for balance and reflection, and “Yet To Come” is immersed in just that. mode. On the other side of the track, a touching piece of alternative hip-hop, the seven members weigh all of the recognition they have received over the years, their purpose and their future.

“That awkward title they gave us one day / We’re still ashamed to be called the best,” Shuga said as the sliding melodies of the coming chorus dipped into the super bass. The humble spirit that the band is still known for coloring its reflections, they often reject the big suggestions attached to the pseudonyms that are often used to denote them (record holders, storytellers and many others). “We just loved the music / We’re just moving forward,” Jungkuk suggests no doubt, while Jay-Hope suggests, even with the lofty notion of the band of the world, there’s still work to be done: “I still have a lot to learn / My life, I have a lot for execution.”

Reflections on Yet To Come not only look back at the past, but also address some of the themes that have remained constant in BTS’s work to date. As they rap and sing their story, they touch on the idea of dreaming (“Do you have a dream? What’s the end of this journey?”), Youth and growth (“Guide to the day / More like ourselves”).

And musically, the song draws attention to what came before. It carries the same emotional atmosphere as “Spring Day” from 2017, one of the best songs of the band, but also takes things even further back. Between the layers of the song is a faint, high-pitched sound that nods to the hip-hop style of sampling chipmunk soul in the early to mid-tens. When RM rap “We gonna touch the sky ‘fore the day we die”, it feels like not just a reference to Kanye West’s “Touch The Sky”, but a subtle, clever nod to this whole era.

The single is not the only piece of fresh material for “Proof”, and the other new tracks continue the exercise to complete this chapter of BTS history. The previously unreleased tracks “Quotation Mark” and “Young Love” drilled smooth holes and poured with soul, respectively, while “Run BTS” returned to the hip-hop roots of the septet in its infectious, captivating rhythms. “For Youth” covers these gems in emotional form, taking samples from “Epilogue: Young Forever” from 2016, before paying tribute to the ever-growing fan base, which is next to them since 2013. “Yes, you are my youth / And my spring / My grateful friend / My pride, my heaven and love “, J-Hope stands out.

When an era comes to an end, there is often a sense of extremity that comes with it, and this is the case with Proof. But, as they say, when one door closes, another opens, and there are many moments in these exciting songs that soothe all fears that it is forever. Just as “Yet To Come” tells us, the most beautiful moment in life will continue to turn into new peaks and, as Jungkook’s silk vow “Promise to keep coming back for more” suggests, BTS will not be far off .
