Ikea announces a record holder, which this time can reach the stores

Ikea, which has never been afraid to dive into new product categories, has announced plans to launch a player as part of its new Obegränsad collection this fall. The turntable was designed in collaboration with the Swedish House Mafia house music supergroup and has a large design in line with many other consumer electronics manufactured by Ikea. Along with it, the Swedish retailer announced an armchair and desk as part of the collection.

This is technically not the first record player to be announced by Ikea. As early as 2018, he announced a turntable made in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, which he hopes to release next year. But according to the Teenage Engineering support page, the player never made it into the final collection.

Ikea engineer Carmen Stoichescu hints at this previous experience in an interview with the new player on the Ikea website. “When the question came to me, I just said, ‘We actually tried to make a player before so we could use the same provider, maybe?'” She says. The recording contains some tips on the functionality of the player, such as the fact that it has a built-in preamp, is powered via USB and has a removable cartridge and needle. In a press release, Ikea also noted that the player will work with its Eneby Bluetooth speaker, but since it does not actually support Bluetooth, it will only work via cable. Otherwise the technical details are thin. It is not clear whether the player has built-in speakers or is limited to cable output.

We asked Ikea these questions along with questions about how much the device is expected to cost. It will be available this fall along with over 20 other products that make up the Obegränsad collection.
