A driver was killed after an Audi crashed into the M56’s central reserve and exploded in flames. Firefighters rushed to the scene near Manchester Airport, but found that the Silver Audi A8 was “well lit.”

In a statement earlier, the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Emergency services are at the scene of a collision on the M56 east between junctions 6 and 7. Firefighters with breathing apparatus are dealing with a burning vehicle using two hose jets.

“Police and highways are controlling traffic while the fire is being put out.”

Deviations were introduced while the highway was closed, resulting in congestion in Altrincham and Hale.

A National Highways spokesman said in a statement: “Drivers in Cheshire and Greater Manchester have been informed that the eastern M56 between junction 7 in Bowdon and junction 6 in Hale Barns has now reopened after a serious accident this morning. The accident happened just before 7 am, involving a vehicle and the east lane was closed for police investigation of the accident, repair and restoration of the vehicle. The road was reopened at 5:10 p.m.

“Traffic arriving at junction 7 was diverted to junction 6 via the A56, while a detour was introduced for routes to central Manchester and the airport using the north of the M6 ​​and the east of the M62. Staff at the Northwest Regional Operations Center (NWROC) near Warrington and the National Traffic Management Center (NTOC) in Birmingham put up electronic signs on the motorway network throughout the day to warn drivers to close the road. “
