Firefighters arrived and tried to put out the big fire when an explosion erupted on Friday, Lenoir County Emergency Services said in a statement.
A civilian who fought the blaze before firefighters arrived was fatally wounded and pronounced dead on the spot, the statement said.
The dead man has been identified as Randy Herring, the owner of the property in La Grange, where the fire broke out, Lenoir County Emergency Services said on Facebook.
Three firefighters from the La Grange volunteer fire service were injured in the blast and taken to hospitals for treatment, the statement said. Two of the firefighters were released and a third was taken to a burn center.
Firefighters were working in the evening to contain the blaze and “completely extinguish the hotspots,” Lenoir County Emergency Services said Saturday.
The incident remains under investigation.
