Graphic evidence presented in Amanda Todd’s extortion trial warns judge

Disturbing evidence presented during the trial of a Dutch man accused of harassing and blackmailing teenage Amanda Todd of BC before he died of suicide prompted a judge to warn the jury before it was shown on Friday.

Judge Martha Devlin advised the 12-member jury to prepare before the courtroom calmed down as a series of graphic videos and images of the 15-year-old were released in court.

The video screen in the public gallery of the courtroom was turned off due to the pornographic nature of the content.

Todd’s mother, Carol, was present at the presentation of the evidence.

“Yes, it is difficult, but it is necessary,” she told the New Westminster Supreme Court.

“I admit that it is not 100 percent easy to see and hear all these things. But part of me is that it has to be said and it has to be shared. ”

The court also heard additional testimony from Vancouver police Det. Const. Robin Schook, digital forensic scientist.

Crown asked Shook about graphic content and how it relates to a range of web browsers, platforms, websites and mysterious user accounts – including a Facebook user account called Austin Collins.

The court previously heard that this Facebook account, which is allegedly managed by a student at Todd’s high school, was used to share explicit images of the teenager.

Todd died of suicide in 2012 after what Crown called a persistent online blackmail campaign.

Aydin Koban, a Dutch citizen, pleaded not guilty to five counts, including possession of child pornography, communicating with a young man for sexual offenses and criminal harassment.

Crown claims that Coban used a network of 22 fake social media accounts to harass and harass her between 2009 and 2012.

Prosecutors allege that he obtained a video in which she shone her breasts and put her hand in her underwear, then used the material to try to blackmail her into performing pornographic shows with a webcam. In several cases, Crown said, he sent links to explicit material to friends, family and the school community.

The case depends on the identity issue, and Coban’s lawyer, Joseph Solnier, said there was no connection between the blackmailer and his client.

Earlier this week, he said he knew the case was emotionally charged, but there must be evidence beyond a reasonable doubt as to who sent Amanda’s messages.

The 35-day trial is scheduled to resume on Monday.
