Best New Play: This Tony Award looks set to go to the Lehman Trilogy, a compelling history lesson that describes the rise and fall of the Lehman Brothers financial empire. Two dark comedies are also underway: Lynn Notge’s “Clyde’s” takes place in a sandwich shop that employs recently inmates; and Martin McDonagh’s Executioners takes place in a bar run by Britain’s second-best executioner, just after the country banned the death penalty. Other contenders include Skeleton Crew, a play by Dominic Morrisso about a group of car factory workers facing a halt, and Minutes, Tracy Lets’ view of the dark secrets kept by a small town administration.

Nominated for 2022, the competition for the best new musical at the Tony Awards – traditionally the most lucrative financial award – is a wide competition in six directions this year. Here is a more detailed look at each nominee:
“MJ.” This biographical jukebox musical follows Michael Jackson as he prepares for a world tour, but avoids accusations of sexual assault against the pop star.
Six: The Musical. This British pop musical for the wives of Henry VIII mixes 16th-century marriage policy with 21st-century selfies and a shadow of singing among six cheeky divas.
Best New Musical: The most nominated show of the season, “Strange Line”, is preferred to win the most important competition for best new musical. The show, a metamusical for novice composers facing their doubts and demons, won 11 Tony nominations. If there is a disorder here, it will most likely come from “MJ”, the biographical jukebox musical that follows Michael Jackson as he prepares for a world tour.
