Arrest by lethal firing on completion; 3 others are wanted

NEW ORLEANS – Authorities have arrested one of four people wanted in the fatal shooting last month of a student’s grandmother ahead of a graduation ceremony at a high school in New Orleans at a local university.

Brandon Rock, 18, appeared in court for the first time on Saturday. Prison records show he was arrested on Friday on charges of manslaughter and illegal carrying of weapons on school property, WVUE-TV reported. Orleans Parish Magistrate Commissioner Robert Blackburn has set the bail at $ 750,000, the station said.

It was unclear if Rock had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.

Rock is one of four suspects identified by New Orleans police on Friday in connection with the deadly shooting of 80-year-old Augustine Greenwood, who was shot in the head while walking to her family’s car after a granddaughter graduation ceremony on May 31 at Xavier University.

Still at large are: 40-year-old Lauren Duplessis, who is wanted for manslaughter, obstruction of justice and illegal carrying of weapons on school property; Frank Bartholomew, 49, is facing charges of obstruction of justice and a 15-year-old juvenile whose name has not been released. The teenager faces charges of illegally carrying a gun on a school property.

At a press conference on Friday, a police lieutenant colonel. Sean Ferguson said the shooting at the university parking lot began after people accompanying two arguing students escalated the conflict by pulling out weapons and firing.

Rock is described as one of the injured at the scene, while the charge of manslaughter shows that police believe he and Duplessis are criminally responsible for Greenwood’s death.

Greenwood was laid to rest after a funeral service on Friday.
