Collingwood’s death is considered suspicious: OPP

Provincial police have indicted a man from Orylia in connection with a “suspicious death” after officers found the body of a woman Friday morning in Collingwood.

Police say 57-year-old John Collins of Orilia has been charged with first-degree murder. The suspect is accused of killing Kinga Kriston, a 55-year-old Collingwood woman.

Police say officers made the discovery at a home in the Georgian Meadows unit on Friday shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Provincial police told CTV News there was no threat to public safety.

“Investigators do not consider this to be an accidental incident,” said interim Sgt. Terry-Ann Pencarina.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Collingwood OPP at 705-445-4321 or 1-888-310-1122.

The accused is expected to appear in court via video on June 13.

Due to an active investigation, police placed several schools in Collingwood in custody for a short time and on Friday.

OPP Const. Trevor McKean said the school safety measure was “an abundance of caution during the initial response to the incident.”

According to school boards, Cameron Street Elementary School, Mountain View Elementary School, Collingwood College, Collingwood Learning Center and St. Mary’s were placed in the hold and secured, which police picked up shortly afterwards.

During the detention and security activities are resumed inside the school, as usual, but all external doors are locked and no one is allowed to enter or leave the building.
