Liverpool may regret Darwin Nunes’ approach as transfer talks begin with Benfica

Liverpool seem ready to make the first mega-money signing of the summer with Benfica striker Darwin Nunes on their radar, but the Reds ultimately regret their current approach to the talks.

Liverpool can play with fire, as they seek to lower the price of Benfica star Darwin Nunes, especially given their outcomes.

The Daily Mail reported that although negotiations with the Primeira Liga team are going smoothly for the striker, they are beginning to deepen the fee. Football director Julian Ward has reportedly flown to Portugal to try to reduce the price of Nunes.

Benfica wants £ 68 million this summer for their striker, which could increase by another £ 17 million in supplements. However, the Reds seem to think that paying £ 85 million for one of the most exciting young strikers in world football is difficult – but they should be aware that there are many other suitors who could meet this much sought after price.

Manchester United, Newcastle and Atletico Madrid have already been linked with the Uruguayan national team and may be tempted to make an offer for the 22-year-old. But Jurgen Klopp’s team may not be able to keep the door open for Benfica.

It is well reported that Sadio Mane has told the club that he wants to leave Anfield this summer, with Bayern Munich wanting to sign the Senegalese international. Liverpool are reportedly seeking a fee of around £ 35 million for the former Southampton star, but will the Bundesliga giants cough up that fee, given that Manet’s contract expires in 2023.

Monaco are also expecting a move for winger Takumi Minamino, according to Foot Mercato. The Japanese international has been struggling in the Premier League since joining the Red Bull club in Salzburg in 2020, starting just one league game this season.

But Minamino was seen as a player who could influence matches late and was regularly inducted into Liverpool’s cup squad, which means leaving him will leave Klopp’s team with no other option in the final third of the rotation. Of course, young Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho are waiting for their chance to shine.

Although Nunes’ 26 goals in 28 games in the league for Benfica this season proves that he is at a different level from the aforementioned stars and already has experience in becoming a regular player under Klopp. But if the Reds slip and fall on the last hurdle with their transfer talks, thus sacrificing the chance to sign with Nunes, they could regret it, given that they are on the verge of losing two strikers who currently have different meanings at Anfield.

Especially since former players’ coach Jose Gomes, who works with the striker in Almeira, believes that Nunes will thrive under Klopp. He told the Record: “He is an athlete at 1.90 meters and with great speed. The speed he has allows the team he plays for to reach the opponent’s goal very easily.

“Klopp likes to play, looking for places in the back of the opponent’s defensive lines, which means we can say that Darwin will feel like a fish in water, because speed and fast attack are characteristics he prefers.” It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will continue with the £ 85 million move.
