Special meteorological declaration issued for Calgary and the region

Calgary and area residents are expected to see a lot of rain over the next few days, prompting Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement early Sunday morning saying “significant rainfall” is expected in the next few days.

“Long-term rainfall will affect the eastern slopes of the Rockies on Monday and Tuesday,” the bulletin said.

“A wide area from Nordeg to Waterton is expected to see at least 50 millimeters by Wednesday morning, with 100 millimeters or more possible in some areas of the foothills.

The agency says the heaviest rainfall is expected in the Kananaskis area.

FLOOD REMINDER

The warning comes as South Alberta prepares to mark nine years since the devastating floods of 2013.

In June of that year, torrential rains quickly melted the snow cover in the mountains, causing flooding to pour through the Rockies and Calgary and High River.

Currently, the snow cover is above average and is melting in weeks, according to federal and provincial officials.

Last month, engineering teams monitoring river floods said the snow cover was above average this year. Authorities said the risk of flooding depends on how much rainfall there is in the region this season.

Meanwhile, the city of Calgary, which has completed significant infrastructure investments designed to mitigate floods since the 2013 disaster, says it is “in a better position to be protected from floods”.

The floods caused more than $ 6 billion in damage, making it one of the most costly natural disasters in Canada’s history.
