Toronto to Offer Monkey Vaccine Clinics for High-Risk Communities

Toronto Public Health says it will start vaccination clinics to immunize high-risk individuals against the monkeypox virus starting Sunday.

It says several vaccination clinics will be held in the coming weeks for those who have had close contact with someone who has tested positive and those at higher risk of being exposed to the virus.

The Sunday clinic is designed for employees of the city baths.

Toronto Public Health says there are 11 confirmed cases in the city as of Saturday, two higher than nine in the province, released a day earlier by Canada’s chief public health officer when she reported a national case number of 112 .

Dr Teresa Tam said most of the cases were among men who said they had had sexual intercourse with other men, although the virus could spread to anyone who had close physical contact with an infected person.

Monkeypox belongs to the same family of viruses as smallpox and smallpox vaccines have proven effective in combating the associated virus. The National Immunization Advisory Committee advises offering a single dose of Imvamune to high-risk individuals exposed to a probable or confirmed case of monkeypox or in an environment where transmission can take place within four days.

reactive for testing suspected samples from monkeypox is seen in a refrigerator in the microbiological laboratory of La Paz Hospital on June 6, 2022 in Madrid, Spain.
