Sunday, June 12, 2022, 8:01 a.m. – There will be a risk of severe thunderstorms on the southern prairies on Sunday. A new storm arrives on Monday with possible significant precipitation for the western parts, with potentially over 100 mm for some areas.
The prairies will be stuck in a stormy pattern set for this week, with Sunday at risk of severe weather conditions as the western regions prepare for potential floods with extreme rainfall by Wednesday. In some areas of Alberta, there may be 75-100 + mm of rain until the storm passes. Although the region is in dire need of rain, it will probably be too much to absorb the dry land for a short period of time, so flooding is likely. More on what you can expect on Sunday and in the coming days, below.

SUNDAY: HEAVY STORMS POSSIBLE FROM ALBERTA TO MANITOBA
Another day with a widespread risk of thunderstorms will cover the prairies on Sunday.
There must be enough energy for some thunderstorms to reach severe limits in southern Alberta, east of Calgary, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, including Corridor Highway 1 between Calgary and Winnipeg.
The strongest storms in this region can lead to heavy hail and strong gusts of wind. No rotation can be ruled out.
Beyond the threat of a storm on Sunday, we need to start looking ahead to the next big storm system, which arrives earlier this week.

FROM MONDAY TO WEDNESDAY: MAIN SYSTEM APPROACHING WEST, TEMPERATURES DIVING
Special weather forecasts are in place for the foothills of Alberta, including the city of Calgary, ahead of a major storm that hit the prairies this week.
“Prolonged rainfall will affect the eastern slopes of the Rockies on Monday and Tuesday,” the Canadian Environment and Climate Change (ECCC) statement said.
A low-pressure system will cross the border on Monday and meander over the central prairies for several days. This low value will lead to heavy rainfall in some areas, with the largest amounts of rainfall likely to be directed to the southern foothills of Alberta.
Constant ups and downs will cause torrential rains from Monday to Wednesday in some areas. We can expect significant total rainfall as a result of this prolonged rainy event. Be on the lookout for potential flooding in some areas.
A wide area from Nordeg to Waterton is expected to see at least 50 mm by Wednesday morning, with 100 mm or more possible in some areas of the foothills. Currently, it looks like the highest rainfall will be near Kananaskis, west of Calgary, although the big city may see 100mm of rain.
This region could certainly use the rain, as we are stuck in extreme drought conditions in the western prairies, but too much rain at once is not the answer.
