The Tony Awards for 2022 are handed out on Sunday night.
The four-hour celebration of the best of Broadway from the 2021-2022 season began with Darren Chris and Julian Huff, who hosted the Tony Awards: Act One at Paramount +, and the awards were presented to members of the creative and design team. Chris and Huff discovered this one-hour show by singing and dancing on the stage of Radio City Music Hall in a song written by Chris.
In the first act, Len Cariou presented this year’s special award for lifetime achievement in the theater to five-time Tony winner Angela Lansbury. While Lansbury was not present, the gay men’s choir in New York paid a special tribute to her.
After the first hour, Michael Jackson’s musical MJ, which entered the night as the second most nominated production with 10 nominations, won three awards. Meanwhile, the eight-time nominees The Lehman Trilogy and SIX: The Musical have won two awards each.
Ariana DeBoz kicks off the main Tony Awards ceremony at 20:00 ET / 17:00 PT with a high-energy musical number that celebrates the last 75 years on Broadway.
Singing “this is your round of applause” to those who have worked on these productions, DeBoz highlighted a number of well-known musicals, including Cabaret, The Wiz, Aladdin, Pippin, Chicago, Sound of Music, Rent, Hamilton, A Chorus Line, Company and West Side Story, even danced to a short piece of “America”, which he played in his Oscar-winning role in the film adaptation of West Side Story. DeBose wore a white bodysuit as she sang and danced on stage, starting her performance with a silver vest inspired by MJ and a white hat and finishing wrapped in a white tuxedo coat.
She then delivered a monologue celebrating the “steps to inclusion” taken on Broadway.
“I’m so proud that the theater is becoming more and more reflective of the community that adores it, and in that way it has gained new performers, new artists, new fans,” DeBois said. “He showed us stories that expanded our world and opened our hearts and minds. And although we haven’t solved all our problems, I have a feeling that the phrase “The Great White Road” is becoming a nickname rather than a guide. “
DeBose also highlighted this year’s diverse nominees, including Lynn Notridge, L. Morgan Lee and Toby Marlowe.
Early acting winners include Jesse Tyler Ferguson of Take Me Out and Patti LuPone of Company, who won for their starring roles. Philicia Rashad won Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for Her Work at Skeleton Crew.
Veteran Hollywood director Sam Mendes won Best Director of a play for his work on the Lehmann Trilogy.
Marian Elliott, meanwhile, won Best Director of the Musical for directing the Sex Exchange Company, thanking the late Stephen Sondheim “for trusting me to tell his story differently and putting the woman first and foremost. “. Elliott was also just one of several winners who hinted at the COVID-19 pandemic, as she dedicated her award to people struggling to survive the live theater, which she said looked in danger.
Take Me Out won for best revival of the play.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical A Strange Loop is leading this year’s nominees with 11 nods. Other top nominees are Paradise Square (10 nominations each); Company (nine names); for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf and Girl From the North Country (seven noms each); “The Musical Man” and “The Skin of Our Teeth” (six names each); and Clyde’s, Hangmen and Mr. Saturday Night (five nomes each).
