The main road was closed after a “serious” accident. The A50 is closed east to the M1 between the J2 on the A6 at Thulston and the J1 on the B6540 Sawley.
Traffic jams across Cavendish Bridge have been reported as traffic diverts around the closure, which is expected to last for hours. The closure is expected to increase the delay in the withdrawal festival around Donington Castle.
Road users are advised to take the A6 Alvaston bypass road and continue 4.6 km on the A5111 and follow the A5111 until it connects with the A52 to the east. Drivers should continue on the A52 approximately 8.0 km to M1 Junction 25 and at the junction take the fifth exit of M1 to the south.

In a Twitter post, Derbyshire police said: “The A50 is closed east on the motorway between J2 A6 Thulston and J1 B6540 Sawley. There was a serious collision and we expect the road to be closed in a few hours. “
