Rebel Wilson turned to fans’ outrage after an Australian newspaper revealed plans to get her out. But first, here’s a reminder of how we got here.

In May, Rebel said she was “happy in a relationship”, revealing that she and her new partner were set up by a mutual friend. At the time, the actor did not share details about his partner’s identity, nor did he respond to Six’s request for comment.

Fast forward to last Thursday, and Rebel shared on Instagram a charming photo of herself and her friend Ramona Agruma, writing: “I thought I was looking for a Disney prince … but maybe what I really needed all this time, she was a Disney princess … #love is love. ”
If you follow Rebel, you will know that this is not the first time Ramona has appeared on her Instagram page. Not only that, but the duo also appeared on the red carpet at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty in March.
However, until her publication on Thursday, it was not publicly known that the two were in a relationship, with reports indicating only months before that Rebel may have met with an Australian colleague, tennis player Matt Reed.

With all this in mind, plus the added context of Rebel’s Instagram caption, most fans were quick to interpret the post as its official release.

But the next day, as fans happily celebrated Rebel’s sweet post, the Sydney Morning Herald published a deleted article claiming she knew about the relationship between Rebel and Ramona long before it was confirmed.

Not only that, the newspaper also wrote that he contacted Rebel on Thursday and gave her “two days to comment on her new relationship” before publishing a story about him.

The author of the article, celebrity reporter Andrew Hornery, then said that contact with Rebel was a “big mistake”, suggesting that it gave her the freedom to ruin his hopes for history.

“Wilson chose to take a look at the story by posting about his new Disney Princess on Instagram early Friday morning,” Hornery wrote. “The same platform he used to show off to his handsome ex-boyfriend, the wealthy American beer baron Jacob Bush.”

He also filed a successful defamation lawsuit against Rebel against Women’s Day, which wrongly denounced the actor as a liar. The writer used this lawsuit to argue that Rebel’s decision not to respond to the “discreet, sincere and honest inquiries” of his publication was “unsatisfactory”, given how “bitterly he complained about the poor standards of journalism” in court. your battle with the magazine.

Others speculated that Rebel may have been forced to share her Instagram post last week for fear of being “forcibly disseminated” by the post.

After the overwhelming reaction, the Sydney Morning Herald initially denied allegations that it was pressuring Rebel, instead saying it “just asks questions and includes a deadline for response as standard practice.”

This only provoked further widespread criticism, and the publication later issued a full apology, in which Hornery admitted that the publication had taken “wrong steps” in its report.

Hornery also said that “as a gay man” he “is well aware of how deeply he hurts discrimination”, adding that he would never want to “inflict this pain on anyone else”. The song has since been removed from the Sydney Morning Herald website.
