McIlroy’s victory came at the height of controversy over PGA Tour deserters for LIV Golf. As one of the faces of the PGA Tour, McIlroy’s victory made a huge statement and cast a shadow over LIV Golf Commissioner Greg Norman.

Norman told The Washington Post that McIlroy had been brainwashed by the PGA Tour. McIlroy responded with the victory of St. George, surpassing Norman in the list of victories of the PGA Tour for all time.

“This is a day I will remember for a long, long time. Twenty-one PGA Tour wins, one more than anyone else,” he said shortly after the victory.

“I had extra motivation for what was happening across the lake. The man leading this tour has 20 wins in the PGA Tour and I was level with him and wanted to get ahead of him. And I did. So, it was really great for me, just a little bit of pride in that, “he continued at the press conference after the round.

McIlroy finished the weekend with a 19-denomination.

“I feel it’s getting harder and harder to win the PGA Tour. Just look at the two guys I played with today. I took the lead and had to shoot with an 8-sub rating to get the job done. the depth of talent on this tour is really, really impressive. And to face guys like JT and Tony and get on top is something to feel really good about, “McIlroy said.
