In significant progress in Congress, senators announced a bipartisan framework for gun security on Sunday. A total of 10 Republicans and 10 Democrats voiced support for the proposal. Politico said the package includes an intensified review of arms buyers aged 21 and under, increased spending on mental health and school security services and incentives for states to pass red flag laws. Under the proposal, gun buyers aged 21 and under will have their criminal and mental health records reviewed. According to the statement, the proposal aims to target what Politico called “illegal unlicensed firearms dealers”. The legislative text has not yet been written, and an aide to the Republican Party involved in the negotiations stressed that the communication was an “agreement on principles, not a legislative text”.
