BBC Sherwood’s latest drama may be technically fictional, but it is inspired by a very real real crime story from a small British community.
The story was seen on television by Quiz founder James Graham after he grew up in the mining village of Nottinghamshire, where the crimes were committed in 2004.
Using the testimonies of those affected by the actual killings, Graham created an entirely fictional story based on an already divided community.

With a stellar cast that includes David Morrissey, Leslie Manville, Joan Frogat and Robert Glenister, as well as in prime time, Sherwood is almost guaranteed to be the main topic of conversation in the coming weeks.
But what exactly happened to the real victims of the murders that inspired this story, and what happened to the perpetrators?
Here’s what you need to know about those whose lives are at the heart of the new drama.
Keith Frogsson
On July 19, 2004, Robert Boyer, 42, shot Keith Frogsson, 62, with a crossbow in front of his home before killing him with a samurai sword.
It is known that the couple often visits the same pub, with Boyer following Frogsson’s movements before attacking.
After the murder, Boyer fled to nearby Annecy Woods before returning two weeks later to set fire to his victim’s house, with Frogson’s daughter and son-in-law inside. Fortunately, they managed to escape.

Speculation about why Boyer targeted Frogsson with such a fierce attack initially boils down to their attachment to the 1984-85 miners’ strike, which split the area in two. They had both worked in the field, but had come from different parts of the strike.
Frogson was attached to the National Union of Miners (NUM) and even after his retirement would wear insignia promoting their slogan “coal, not donations”. Boyer, meanwhile, has joined the Union of Democratic Miners (UDM), separating from NUM.
Later, however, it turned out that Boyer suffered from delusions that led him to believe that Frogsson was trying to destroy his home. It is not known how or why he focused on Frogsson.
While fleeing, Boyer remained in the Annesley Forest until he was finally captured on August 15, when mass persecution uncovered his hiding place, a makeshift lair dug into the ground on the side of a hill. Initially finding the place empty, but with clear signs of life, they paved the area until he returned.
Boyer tried to resist the arrest, but was eventually brought in with the help of electroshock devices. In court, his conviction (on charges of manslaughter) was accepted.
Prosecutor Andrew Eastill told the court: “He was convinced that Keith Frogsson was trying to dismantle his house brick by brick, that the acid was being thrown into the brickwork and that a screwdriver had been used to break the brick.
“He had developed a fixation with Mr. Frogsson. He was obsessed with the idea that Mr. Frogsson was stalking him and trying to damage his home.

“Mr Frogsson was completely innocent of this and had no idea what Boyer thought or the delusions he was experiencing.
Regarding the decision to make the case an involuntary manslaughter and not a murder conviction, a spokesman for the royal prosecutor’s office said: “It was only after very careful consideration and consultation that the prosecution team decided that the evidence has been sustainable. “
Frogsson’s family was briefed on the decision, and a discussion was held on the sentence.
Boyer was briefly sent to prison and is now in hospital indefinitely.
Chanel Rodgers
On July 30, 2004, just 11 days after Frogsson’s murder and about six miles from Annecy Woods, 23-year-old Chanel Rodgers was shot and killed by her father, Terry Rodgers.
Rodgers, 55, had a history of domestic violence, having previously been in prison for his first wife’s hammer attack. He separated from his second wife a few weeks before the murder.

When Rodgers was evicted from his family home, newlywed Chanel offered her father a place to stay with her and her husband Lee in Huthwaite.
After shooting Chanel four times with a rifle, Rodgers fled to Annecy Woods in a similar way to Boyer.
He was finally captured on August 16, the day after Boyer and after 17 days on the run. Rodgers denied the murder, but admitted to the premeditated murder with reduced responsibility, never offering more information as to why he killed Chanel. This request was rejected by the court.
Instead of going to court, Rodgers went on hunger strike and died before the trial began.
Chanel’s mother, Anne McPherson, has criticized Sherwood’s production and the use of her daughter’s death as a source.

“How can my daughter’s murder be played out sensitively? I didn’t want to have anything to do with it,” she said. The mirror.
“I don’t want to watch it, but I will have to, reluctantly, because I have to see how my daughter and our family present themselves and what they say about us.

The BBC defended the series and said in a statement: “The production works closely with a number of people locally during the creation of the series to ensure that their stories are told with sensitivity and respect for those who prefer not to participate directly.
“As a result, it was decided to invent the series, instead of creating a literal adaptation of any event, including inventing new characters, names and stories.
“Sherwood is a story that is personal to James Graham and inspired in part by events in the community in which he grew up over many years.”
Sherwood airs Monday and Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One and will then be available on BBC iPlayer.
