IOPC says three people died after M606 crash and two others recover in hospital
The Independent Police Behavior Service (IOPC) continues to gather evidence as part of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal clash in Bradford.
Three people died after the M606 accident, near the Chain Bar roundabout, around 10.45 pm last night (June 13th).
We received a mandatory referral from the West Yorkshire Police Department due to the fact that one of the vehicles involved, a Ford Transit van, had come out and bypassed the wrong roundabout while a police car was nearby. The van, which is suspected to have been stolen, then entered the M606, traveling in the wrong direction, where it collided with a taxi.
We sent investigators to the scene to assess the situation and procedures after the incident. We received initial information from the police and are in the process of collecting and reviewing footage of the incident. Currently available evidence shows that the police did not follow the van in the wrong direction on the highway.
The 28-year-old taxi driver and the 48-year-old passenger in the taxi and the 18-year-old passenger in the van have since died. Two other people involved in the clash are recovering in hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
IOPC Regional Director Thea Walton said: “It was a tragic accident that killed three people. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.
“We understand that this will cause serious concern in the community and I would like to assure people that there will be a thorough, independent investigation to find out exactly what happened.
“We will contact the families as soon as possible to explain our role and how our inquiries will develop.
