Lizzo announces commitment to change Ableist lyrics in hit song GRRRLS – Deadline

Lizo heard the shouts of her fans and is ready to change the lyrics of her hit single “GRRRLS”.

Today, Lizzo announced on social media that she will release a new version of the song GRRRLS to remove the obscene word “sp * z” included in the previous version.

“I was reminded that there is a harmful word in my new song ‘GRRRLS’,” she said in a Twitter post. “Let me be clear: I never want to promote degrading language. As a fat black woman in America, I had a lot of insulting words used against me, so I understand the power that words can have (whether intentionally or, in my case, unintentionally), ”she continued. “I am proud to say that there is a new version of GRRRLS with a change in the text. This is the result of listening and taking action. As an influential artist, I am committed to being part of the change I have been waiting to see in the world. ”

The text reads: “Hold my bag, hook, hold my bag. Do you see this sucks? I’m sp ** z. “

People hurried to refer to the text, while a Twitter user turned and explained why the word was hurtful for the community with disabilities and mental illness.

Hey @lizzo my disability Cerebral palsy is literally classified as spastic diplegia (where spasticity refers to endless painful tightness in my legs) your new song makes me quite angry + sad. “Spaz” does not mean scared or crazy. This is an ambitious slander. 2022. Do better.

The musician received a flood of criticism of the lyrics, which led her to announce her decision to change the lyrics.

Lizzo Special’s album is released on July 15 and the first single, “About Damn Time” is already in the top 10 hits.
