Steven Strasberg is back on the injured list

WASHINGTON – Steven Strasberg returns to the injured list less than a week after returning a year later.

Strasbourg, which was due to start on Tuesday, was uncomfortable after dropping out of its bullpen session on Saturday and undergoing an MRI scan on Monday. After the national team lost 9-5 to Braves, manager Dave Martinez said there would be more information about Strasbourg on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old right-hander returned to the hill on Thursday, conceding seven runs with eight hits and two walks for 4 2/3 innings against Marlins. In addition to fatigue in his legs, Strasbourg told Martinez that he is feeling well after his debut this season.

But on Sunday, Strasbourg warned the team that he was “not feeling well”.

“We hoped it was just something that would go away,” Martinez said. “Did not happen. … We still don’t know if this is the same problem or not, but we will know more … as soon as we get an MRI and the doctors read the image. But he smells because he was excited to come back. But let’s hope it’s just a small failure. “

The last two years have been marked by injuries to Strasbourg. His 2020 season was limited to five innings due to carpal tunnel surgery in his right arm, and the following season was shortened by 21 2/3 frames for thoracic surgery. Strasbourg is diligently rehabilitating this spring at the West Palm Beach National Training Center in Florida, and he threw three rehabilitative starts in the Minor League before recovering.

“This is an operation that, after talking to doctors and trainers, is relatively new and affects boys in different ways,” Martinez said of chest surgery. “After the operation, you just see things in a wider range and hope that they come back and can get on and suddenly become the person they were before. But you just don’t know what to expect, you don’t know how long before you get sick. I’ve seen this with other boys before, and it took them a while. Some guys, a few years before they managed to come back and really overcome it and introduce themselves. So let’s hope that’s not the case for Stephen. As I said, it’s so different for each pitcher. “

When healthy, Strasbourg can anchor the initial rotation. After making a 5-0 postseason and being named MVP for the 2019 World Series, he signed a seven-year deal worth $ 245 million with the national team. Strasbourg’s long-term health outweighs the discomfort of the here and now.

“As I said all along, we will be as careful with him as possible and we will try to do everything we can for Stephen and this organization to move forward,” Martinez said. “We are currently on these uneven roads and we will see what happens.”

The national team fills Strasbourg’s place in the starting rotation on Tuesday, calling right-hander Jackson Tetru from Triple-A Rochester to make his debut in the Majliga. Tetreault, 26, is 5-3 with a 4.19 ERA in 12 starts (58 innings) this season with the Red Wings. He is on schedule for the field, last picking up the mound on Tuesday. The Nats selected Tetreault in the seventh round of the 2017 draft.

“He was good,” Martinez said. “It has a combination of three different tones. He throws punches, which is nice. He’s doing well down there, so we’ll give him a chance to play here. “

Although Josiah Gray did not make her scheduled start on Monday after a one-hour and 33-minute delay in the rain, the nationals treated his pre-match warm-up as a session with the bullpen, so he will not be available the next day.

“He won’t let go tomorrow,” Martinez said. “He became hot. He threw, in my opinion, 37 blows into the fur. I mean, he was hot, ready to go.
