The Ontario NDP will take the first step in appointing an interim leader

The New Democratic Party of Ontario is expected to take the first step in appointing an interim leader following the resignation of Andrea Horvat earlier this month.

The party told CP24 that the NDP group would recommend Peter Tabuns, a longtime MPP for Toronto-Danforth, for Wednesday’s role.

Over the next few weeks, the party’s executive branch will make an official recommendation to the provincial council and a vote will be held.

No other names have been mentioned so far.

Tabuns has served as MPP for Toronto-Danforth since 2006 and has served as a spokesman for the official opposition on energy and climate issues.

He introduced himself as party leader in 2009, but lost to Horvat, who has held the post for 13 years.

Hours after the results of the June 2nd election were announced, Horvat stood in front of his supporters and said it was time to “hand over the torch”.

Although it maintained its position as the official opposition in Ontario, the NDP failed to make much progress on election day, losing nine seats it won four years ago.

The Liberal Party will also soon have to nominate a temporary leader. The night Horvat resigned, Stephen Del Duca said he would not remain party leader.

Del Duca failed to win at home, driving Von Woodbridge, and the Liberals won only eight seats in the legislature.
