Three migrant workers hit, one killed in bicycle collision in St. Catherine

A 36-year-old cyclist was killed and two others were injured in a collision with a vehicle in western St. Catharines on Monday night.

Niagara Regional Police said Tuesday that all three men are Mexican residents who live in St. Catherine and work on a local farm.

Police said the three cyclists were hit by a white Ford Edge around 6:42 p.m. Monday on Seventh Street Louth between South Service Road and Second Avenue Louth. Police, fire and paramedics responded to the scene.

All three were treated on the spot and transported by Niagara Ambulance to a hospital.

Police said the 36-year-old man was in critical condition and died despite on-site resuscitation efforts at the hospital.

The other two cyclists, aged 36 and 42, were non-life-threatening. They were still in hospital on Tuesday with serious injuries.

This is not the first time tragedy has struck seasonal workers on the roads of Niagara.

In August 2019, a 33-year-old Mexican woman and mother of two was hit by a truck while walking on Concession 7 Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake. A Pelham driver was sentenced to two years in prison in the strike and running case.

The Seventh Street Louth clash came less than a week after St. Louis. Catharines has launched its first protected bike lane in a pilot project to separate cyclists and vehicles on the safety lane.

The Oakdale Avenue project in Merritton uses plastic poles on both sides of the road to delineate between one and a half meters of bike lanes and cars.

An online petition calling for the removal of plastic dividers was launched shortly after they were installed, with just over 70 signatures on Monday.

The Niagara region plans to test a two-kilometer protected bike lane on Martindale Road in St. Catharines this summer.

The circumstances surrounding the Seventh Street Louth crash are being investigated. Police say no charges have been filed.

The Seventh Street Louth section reopened overnight after detectives from the Collision Reconstruction Department and the Forensic Services Department investigated.
