iPad with Lightning port may switch to USB-C this year

Rumors have spent much of this year discussing whether and when Apple will switch its iPhone line from Lightning to USB-C, a split that is now expected to happen in 2023. And yet, as it happens, it seems that the company is quietly working to complete the same transition for the iPad.

iPad Pro received USB-C back in 2018; iPad Air followed in 2020; and the iPad mini passed in 2021. Now Apple is set to update the 10.2-inch iPad and completely eliminate Lightning from its tablet range, according to 9to5Mac sources.

As the cheapest tablet Apple sells, the 10.2-inch model is usually the last to get the features it wants. In addition to the USB-C port in place of the current Lightning port, the 10th-generation iPad (which 9to5Mac says is codenamed J272) will also complete Apple’s transition to 5G.

He may be the last to do this, but the standard iPad that makes these changes is very important. This is Apple’s most popular iPad and will attract a large part of the population using tablets to the USB-C and 5G standards.

One transition he will not join, however, is Apple’s move to silicon. The report says that the 10th generation iPad will have an A14 Bionic processor, not the M1 chip in the current iPad Pro and Air models. The entry-level iPad will probably have to wait until the iPad mini gets an M-Class chip; The 6th generation mini has an A15.

As for the rest of the specs, 9to5Mac sources say the screen size is likely to increase from the current 10.2 inches to 10.5 or even 10.9 inches and will have the same resolution as the current iPad Air. But they aren’t sure if this will be accompanied by a major redesign to remove the Home button and move the Touch ID sensor to the top power button.
