Netflix makes the Squid Game really (without blood and blood).
The streaming platform has approved a reality series called “Squid Game: The Challenge”, which will pit 456 contestants against each other in a series of games inspired by the hit show.
There is a prize of 4.56 million dollars – which according to Netflix is the largest cash prize in the history of reality television.
“The stakes are high, but in this game the worst fate is to return home empty-handed,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
Netflix has opened a casting for the show for English-speaking people around the world. The shooting will take place in the UK. The series is co-produced by production companies Studio Lambert and The Garden, which is part of the British television company ITV.
Released in 2021, “Squid Game” quickly became an international success. It’s the most-watched Netflix show of all time, with people spending 1.65 billion hours watching it in the first 28 days of its release.
The action takes place in South Korea, “Squid Game” sees 456 players in financial difficulties risking their lives through various deadly children’s games for a big cash prize. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator, drew inspiration for the show from his own family’s struggles after the 2008 financial crisis. A second series is now officially in the works.
Netflix said Squid Game: The Challenge will include games from the original series, as well as some “surprising new additions.” It will include a total of 10 episodes.
The show could be a way for Netflix to use some of its lucrative content to attract more users to the platform. The company is facing difficulties due to the impact of rising inflation, the removal of restrictions on Covid-19 and competition from competing companies such as Disney.
