Nintendo calls for investigation into “drift” affecting Switch Joy-Con controllers | Science and technology news

Nintendo needs to commission an independent investigation into the Joy-Con controller problem on its Switch game console, user group Who? he says.

The Nintendo Switch was launched five years ago, but was haunted by “drift” reports – when the console detects movement, even though the joysticks are not used.

Nintendo said only a small number of devices were affected and customers experiencing problems should contact them.

Who? said it had surveyed 919 UK-based owners of the original Switch.

About 40% reported drift problems, but only 73% contacted Nintendo about it.

This was despite the fact that the gaming company offers a two-year warranty on the console.

About 19% of those who complained did not receive repairs or replacements.

Who? Director of Policy and Advocacy Rocio Concha said: “Our research shows that drift problems continue to plague Nintendo Switch owners, but too often they can be left to pay for themselves to replace faulty controllers or face the lottery. when contacting Nintendo for support.

“Nintendo must urgently commission an independent investigation into why this problem occurs and make the findings public.

“The video game giant must also commit to completely free repairs or replacement of those affected by the problem, and must promote this scheme so that consumers know that support is available.”

Who? said his own testing on the Switch console did not reveal any drift problems, adding that this proves how difficult it is to detect the problem, which means an investigation is the best way.

Nintendo said: “The percentage of Joy-Con controllers reported to have had problems with the analog stick in the past is small and we are making continuous improvements to the Joy-Con analog stick since its launch in 2017.

“We expect all of our hardware to work as designed, and if something doesn’t meet that goal, we always encourage users to contact Nintendo customer support, who will be happy to openly and condescendingly resolve any consumer issues related to analog controllers.” Joy-Con sticks, including in cases where the warranty may not apply. “
