Todd Howard: Problem-free space flight made no sense for Starfield, Fallout 5 comes after Elder Scrolls VI

Bethesda Game Studios has a lot of work to do, as Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard said even more clearly in a recent interview with IGN. Howard not only revealed a few more details about Starfield, but also talked about the studio’s plans for the future, even Fallout 5, which dropped the name.

Bethesda’s space adventure showed its first gameplay during this week’s Xbox and Bethesda performances, and players made many comparisons to No Man’s Sky. One notable feature of this game was the ability to fly ships directly from space to the planet without any cargo, an impressive achievement, given the huge scale of the game’s universe.

Howard recalled that the developers tested a similar feature for Starfield, but it ended up on the floor in the cutting room, as the element “is not so important to the player” compared to the time required for its development. “We decided at the beginning of the project that there is one reality on the surface, and then when you are in space, it is another reality.

Compared to No Man’s Sky, Starfield overlays with traditional worlds and Bethesda’s role-playing storytelling over vast space exploration, so Howard’s argument about complexity probably holds water. So, although the Xbox Series X | S has an incredibly fast hard drive inside, the size of the game means that the team prefers to focus on many other parts of the game. In addition, speaking of its scale, Howard also said that Starfield will be the biggest of Bethesda’s games so far. “He has more quests, so he may be 20% more than our previous ones.”

Many of these quests are likely to take place in or around New Atlantis, the largest city Bethesda has ever built and one of four major cities players will explore throughout history. While players will have something to do on the game’s 1,000 planets, Starfield will have no shortage of handmade content, and Howard has made it clear that players can bypass procedurally generated spaceflight and get straight to the good stuff.

Fans of other Bethesda properties may be wondering about the progress in the development of The Elder Scrolls VI, which was announced years ago with Starfield. Howard said the game is still in the pipeline and even said Fallout 5 will be next on the market after another trip to Tamriel. With these two games in development, Bethesda’s core RPG team will be working hard for decades to come.
